Apache - New Project pt 1

Something I have been toying with for quite a while now is to do some covers of the Shadows songs that originally inspired me.It is with some trepidation that I'm embarking on this, as the music is hard wired into the DNA of my playing and I want to do them justice whilst putting a little bit of new spin on them.

For Apache, the rhythm is very specific and the way the drums are used to underpin it is integral to the song. Also it has the unmistakable staccato parts. I want to keep the feel of the song, but make some subtle changes to make it stand on its own.

Apache Rhythm

Currently I have an idea to add a more atmospheric opening bringing in the drums more subltley with some Jeff Beck style harmonics and breathy synth pads beneath. Quite how that will then link into the standard intro Ive not quite figured yet, but it will be built in by the drums in some way.

Apache Intro Idea

Influences that I have in mind for this is 'Mystic Rhythms' by Rush for the use of the drums and 'Eruption' by EVH for the 'bouncing' lines just before it goes into the tapped parts - I think this will give a nice spin on the echo effect used by Hank in the middle 8.

Apache Drums

The change to the first verse is a slight adjustment to the 'D' part. The drums under this I want to be using the toms rather than the snare a la 'Mystic Rhythms'. Then the F staccato part I have a slight alteration to the rhythm of it.

Apache Lead

At the moment whilst thinking about the structure and construction Ive also started working on  getting the sound - at the moment it looks like a cleaner sound for the opening parts, but moving into something with distortion as it progresses through in preparation for the middle 8 where it will be needed to help the bounce 'flow'.
